2014 GUIDELINES FOR SUBMITTING TO WMC’s SECOND ANTHOLOGY:
WRITERS OF THE MENDOCINO COAST: UPWELLING

Submissions are accepted to September 18, 2013.

You must be a member to submit (but you can join up to the closing date by sending a check made out to WMC ($65 to join; $40 to renew this year) to PO Box 762, Fort Bragg, CA 95437. Make sure the postmark on your check is earlier than your submission.

Word Limit: 3,000 words

Genre: Fiction, Non-fiction or poetry. Write to the theme: Upwelling, but take that theme very liberally. Some of you who are working on books may want to find a piece that stands alone to excerpt.

You may enter more than once, but follow the format below for each entry.

FORMAT

Fiction and non-fiction should be double-spaced, 12 point, Times New Roman font. Poetry may be single-spaced and formatted as the poet would like it to appear on the page; but use the Times New Roman 12-point font.

No name should appear on your entry, only the title of the work. Please number pages.

TO SUBMIT

For each entry send two attachments in Word doc. or Word docx to Amie McGee at O2bmonamie@aol.com (the first character is the letter O.)

  1. First Attachment: A title page with the name of the piece, your name, email address, the genre, and a statement: “I (your name) declare this to be original work, not previously published (Good Words doesn’t count as published).

  1. Second Attachment: The work itself, with a title and numbered pages, but no author’s name

Each piece will be read, with no author’s name attached, by two judges. No judge will read work by anyone familiar to him or her. If the two scores are 3 or more points apart, a third reading will be done. You will be notified if your work has been accepted by October 20. Small edits may be requested with the approval of the author.

*Upwelling is a process where cold water at the bottom of ocean is pulled from the lower depths and brought to the ocean surface. Here in northern California, growing heat inland intensifies the wind along the coast and increases the upwelling of colder nutrient-rich water.

For the purposes of our anthology, the theme broadens. We could be talking about an upwelling of emotion—happiness, jealousy, rage, grief—or we could get literal. It could be this morning’s breakfast.
