EKPHRASIS : Art Describing Art : 2015

California Writers Club, Mendocino Branch : A Collaboration : Artists Co-Op of Mendocino

MESSAGE TO WRITERS

Dear Art Interpreter,

You will receive your artwork at the July 16th WMC meeting. If you cannot make the meeting, please make arrangements (with a cc to Katherine Brown atmcwc2@att.net) for someone else to pick up the artwork for you.

When you have completed your interpretation, please send an electronic copy of your created prose/poetry inspiration to Katherine Brown, mcwc2@att.net no later than September 1, 2015, in .rtf, .doc, or .docx format (no .pdf please). Margins should be one inch or larger all sides, with a 12 pt. (or larger) font. Again, the piece can be no longer than one page, since it will be framed. It may be single or double spaced.  Yes, you can put your name on this final submission.

The artist’s piece needs to be returned to the Artist’s Cooperative Mendocino Gallery at 45270 Main St. (second floor above Ocean Quilts),  Mendocino, CA 95460, phone number (707) 937-2217, no later than September 1, 2015. The gallery hours are 10am – 5pm seven days a week. It’s best to rewrap the work to protect it for the journey.

Save the date of Second Saturday, October 10. Your written work will be mounted next to the artist’s piece and revealed at the gallery’s Second Saturdayparty starting  at four o’clock. Plan to bring an appetizer and your friends and family to celebrate and to meet the artist. (Note that the gallery is on the second floor and it is not wheelchair accessible). All art pieces will be for sale.

Also, please plan to read your piece at the Writers of the Mendocino Coast Club meeting on Thursday, October 15, at 6:00 pm at the Mendocino Hotel. A photograph of the artist’s piece will be shown on the projector during your reading. If you are unable to read, please cc Katherine Brown at mcwc2@att.net with the name of the person you’ve chosen to read your piece for you.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Best,

Katherine

GUIDELINES

This year we’ll be celebrating our fourth Ekphrasis event (art interpreting art), and we have new, easier rules.

If you have been showcased in previous Ekphrasis events, you merely have to e-mail Katherine Brown (mcwc2@att.net) to enter the category drawings. We’ll pull the names at the May 21st meeting. Ten names will be drawn for Writing Being Interpreted by Artist and ten names will be drawn for Writer Interpreting Art Piece. Please let Katherine know which category you want to try for. You can even put your name in for either.

If you have NOT entered before, please send a one page writing sample of your choice to Katherine to qualify.

You need not be at the May 21st meeting for the drawing,

Once names are drawn, writers preparing pieces for artists will have until June 30th midnight to send their one page poem or flash piece (Times New Roman, 12 pt. font, .doc, .docx, or .rtf) to Katherine. Writers who will be interpreting an artist will choose the art piece at the July 16th meeting, when the artists join us for the exchange (you will need someone to pick up the piece if you are not present), and will have until September 5th midnight to send their one page poem or flash piece (see above) to Katherine. We’ll gather at the Artists' Co-op in Mendocino for October’s Second Saturday to view the finished pieces. Pieces will be read (with a slide of the artwork) at our October 15 WMC meeting, and later posted to our website.
