PUBLISHING CLUB
Judy Detrick "Introducing the First Steps in Book Design" - Tuesday, 6/7/16, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. (NOTE EARLIER STARTING TIME) tentatively set for the Mendocino Coast campus in room 112.
Judy taught calligraphy and graphic design at the College of the Redwoods on the Mendocino coast for more than thirty years and developed the Graphic Arts Certificate Program. Active in the Bay Area calligraphy community, she teaches regularly at several Bay Area venues and throughout Northern California, including the San Francisco Center for the Book. She served as editor of Alphabet, the Journal of the Friends of Calligraphy from 2007 to 2010. Her work is well represented in the Harrison Calligraphy Collection in Special Collections at the San Francisco Public Library, and has authored the book, Simply Calligraphy, published April 19, 2016.
She will introduce the first steps in book design, the practical matters of determining page size, type of binding, margins, typeface and pagination. You will be aided in making these design decisions via a worksheet. This talk will not involve the computer or the application Adobe InDesign, as these design questions must be decided first. Everyone will get a copy of the first handout, and all are welcome to participate in the discussions. People will have a chance to meet Judy, get a sense of the content of the class, her teaching style and pace, etc. Questions about obtaining/installing InDesign Creative Cloud (IDCC) will be addressed. You can then decide if you want to participate in Judy’s 8 week class, Putting Your Book Into Printable Form, below.
Putting Your Book Into Printable Form, will be held at Judy’s home, between Mendo and Fort Bragg. Eight sessions, Tuesdays 2-4, June 14, 21 (No Class June 28) July 5, 12, 19, 26, August 2, and 9. The fee is $100.
By the first class on June 14, IDCC must be installed on attendee's laptop, as we will begin straight away with learning to navigate that program. Be sure to bring your worksheet from the PubClub meeting to class. Instruction is both group lecture/discussion and "one-on-one sitting next to each person." Students will also have electronic access to Judy throughout the course. Judy’s plan is to begin each class with a brief discussion about what we will cover for that day. All students will be looking at the same screens at the same time and can ask questions. That portion of the class will take no more than the first 45 min.-1 hour. For the remainder of the class she will go around to each student helping with individual problems or concerns. Putting Your Book Into Printable Form is not a MCFB PubClub event.
Please join us and pass the word.
Thanks,
