The Structure of Fiction
with Josh Weil

Author Josh Weil will be the guest of the California Writers Club for a reading and a discussion of the craft of writing. His debut book was the highly acclaimed The New Valley, published in 2010, a New York Times Editors Choice that won the Sue Kaufman Prize for First Fiction from The American Academy of Arts and Letters and a “5 Under 35” Award from the National Book Foundation.

The presentation is free, and open to the public. Gallery Bookshop will have copies of Weil's book available for purchase at the event.

The New Valley is comprised of linked novellas that bring readers into America's remote back country and unveil the private worlds of three very different men as they confront love, loss, and their own personal demons. His new novel, The Great Glass Sea, will be published in late 2013.

A recipient of fellowships from the Fulbright Foundation, the MacDowell Colony, and the Bread Loaf and Sewanee Writers’ Conferences, he has taught at New York University, Brooklyn College, as the Distinguished Visiting Writer at Bowling Green State University, and was the Grisham Writer-in-Residence at the University of Mississippi.

Visit his website at JoshWeil.com. Even better, see the New York Times - Sunday Book Review article titled, "Hill Country Blues" by Anthony Doerr, the author of “The Shell Collector,” “About Grace” and “Four Seasons in Rome.”Doer concludes, "Keep writing novellas, Josh Weil, because you write very good ones. You think on it, and we’ll watch" echoing a line in the third novella ofThe New Valley.
Not to be missed is a 2009 interview in the Arts Beat section of the New York Times titled, "Stray Questions for: Josh Weil" by Gregory Cowles. Josh no longer lives in Baltimore, but does answer questions: What are you working on now; describe a typical day in your writing life; and what have you been reading or recommending lately?

Another set of eight writers provided one page to prompt a piece of art by eight artists representing the Coop.

On October 17th, the Writers of the Mendocino Coast will host each of the sixteen writers in a reading of their work while a photo of the art is projected onto a screen.
The artists are invited to attend and comment on their work
